Bamboo sheets are easy to love and easy to ruin

Read the reviews on any bamboo sheet set and you'll find the same arc. The first two weeks are rapturous. Then somebody's seams start fraying, somebody else pulls a wrinkled heap out of the dryer, and a third person finds a stain that wasn't there before.

Almost none of that is bad luck. Viscose is a fine, smooth fibre, and it has specific things it doesn't tolerate — heat, bleach, oil-based detergent, being washed with towels. Most sellers won't tell you, because it's easier to print "easy care" on the packaging and let the returns happen later.

We'd rather tell you. The sheets are genuinely excellent. Here's what they do, and here's what will wreck them.

You kick the covers off at 2am, then get cold

Cotton holds warmth against you and absorbs moisture without moving it anywhere, so heat builds up until you throw the duvet off — and then you're too cold ten minutes later. Viscose derived from bamboo works differently. It pulls moisture off your skin and lets it evaporate, so the heat has somewhere to go before it becomes the thing that wakes you. The fabric is also thin enough to drape against you without an air gap, which is why it feels cool the moment you get in rather than after you've warmed it up.

The corner that pings off at 4am

Modern mattresses are thick, and most fitted sheets were cut for thinner ones. The corner lets go, you wake up on bare mattress, and you spend a minute in the dark hauling it back on. These have 16-inch deep pockets with elastic running the whole way around rather than just at the corners — the difference between a sheet that grips the mattress and one that's balanced on it.

The four things that destroy bamboo sheets

Every bad review in this category traces back to one of these. None of them are hard to avoid, and nobody tells you before you buy.

1 Heat. Hot water and a hot dryer break the fibre down and take the cool feel with them. Cold wash, tumble on low, and pull them out while they're barely dry.
2 The wrong detergent. Oil-based detergents leave marks on viscose that look like stains and won't come out. A free-and-clear liquid detergent avoids the whole problem. Skip liquid fabric softener entirely — it coats the fibre and kills the thing you bought them for.
3 Washing them with towels. Rough fabric against smooth fabric is what causes pilling and pulls at seams. Wash the set on its own.
4 Bleach. It eats the fibre. There's no gentle amount.

Follow those four and the set outlasts the cotton sheets you're replacing. Ignore them and you'll be writing one of the reviews we mentioned at the top.

About wrinkles, since everyone else claims there aren't any

Viscose creases. It creases less than linen and more than a polyester blend, and if you leave it sitting in the dryer it will crease a lot. Take it out while it's slightly damp and put it straight on the bed and most of it falls out on its own. We're telling you this because "wrinkle-free" is printed on half the sheet sets in this category and contradicted by their own reviews, and you'd find out in a week anyway.

The specifics

Fabric
100% viscose derived from bamboo. No polyester blended in — worth stating plainly, because a lot of what's sold as bamboo bedding is mostly something else.
In the set
One fitted sheet, one flat sheet, two pillowcases.
Fit
Deep pockets for mattresses up to 16 inches, with elastic all the way around the fitted sheet rather than only at the corners.
Care
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, liquid detergent, no softener, no bleach, tumble dry low or line dry. Wash the set on its own.

Sheets this good are worth the four rules. We'd rather you know them now than find out in the comments.

Premium 100% Viscose Bamboo Bed Sheet Set - Cooling Comfort

Most "bamboo" sheets are mostly not bamboo

The word does a lot of heavy lifting in this aisle. Plenty of bedding sold as bamboo is a blend — a bit of bamboo-derived viscose carried along by polyester, because polyester is cheap, and because nobody reads the composition line.

It's not a small difference. Polyester is a plastic thread; it holds heat against you and pushes moisture nowhere. Viscose derived from bamboo is what gives you the cool, fluid feel people buy these sheets for, and it only behaves that way when there isn't a synthetic fibre running through it. This set is 100% viscose derived from bamboo, which is also why the care instructions matter more here than on a poly-blend.

What we'll say that they won't

The fabric in this category is broadly similar from seller to seller. What differs is how much you're told before you spend the money — and most of the one-star reviews out there are people who weren't told.

  Typical bamboo sheet set

Cooling, moisture-wicking bamboo-derived fabric

Deep pockets for thick mattresses

100% viscose from bamboo, no polyester blended in

Tells you what will ruin them before you buy

Admits the fabric creases instead of saying "wrinkle-free"

No hypoallergenic or anti-bacterial claims we can't prove

Why we made this

Go and read the reviews under any well-rated bamboo sheet set. Hundreds of people delighted, and scattered among them the same handful of stories: seams fraying after a month, a stain that appeared in the wash, a wrinkled heap out of the dryer that never smoothed out.

Almost none of that is a faulty product. It's a delicate fibre sold with "easy care" on the packaging. The BambooLux™ - Cooling Sheet Set is the same good fabric with the instructions attached — because a sheet set that lasts three years is a better outcome for you than one you replace angrily in four months.

Questions

I've read about seams fraying. Will that happen?

It's the most common complaint in this category and it usually comes from one thing: washing smooth fabric with rough fabric. Towels, denim and anything with a zip abrade viscose and drag at the stitching. Wash the set on its own, cold, on a gentle cycle, and the seams are fine. It's a genuinely delicate fibre and we'd rather say so than have you find out.

A stain appeared after washing. What happened?

Almost always the detergent. Oil-based detergents leave marks on viscose that look like grease stains and don't come out. Switch to a free-and-clear liquid detergent and it stops happening. Liquid fabric softener causes a related problem — it coats the fibre and flattens the cool, smooth feel you bought the sheets for.

Are they slippery?

Somewhat, and that's the same property as the silky feel — you don't get one without the other. Worth knowing if you use an adjustable bed with the head raised, or if your pillows tend to wander. On a flat bed most people never think about it after the first night.

Do they get softer over time?

Yes, over the first several washes, provided you're washing them cold and drying them low. Heat is what reverses it — a hot dryer stiffens the fibre and takes the cool feel with it. Pull them out while they're barely dry and they keep improving.

Will the fitted sheet stay on my mattress?

The pockets take mattresses up to 16 inches deep, with elastic around the full perimeter rather than gathered at the corners. That's what stops the 4am corner release — a sheet with corner-only elastic is balanced on the mattress rather than gripping it. Measure your mattress including any topper before choosing.

What's in the set?

One fitted sheet, one flat sheet and two pillowcases.

Should I wash them before using them?

Yes. A first cold wash on its own settles the fabric and brings out the softness. Don't be tempted to add softener or wash it with the towels to save a cycle — that first wash is where a lot of sets get damaged.

What if they're not right for me?

Get in touch and we'll sort it out. If they don't do what we said they would on this page, that's on us, not you.
