Every board is a trade-off. This is where bamboo lands.

Plastic boards are cheap and dishwasher-safe, and after six months they're a web of knife scars that hold onto onion no matter how hard you scrub. Glass and stone look immaculate forever and quietly destroy the edge on every knife you own. Softwood boards feel lovely and scar if you look at them.

Bamboo sits in the narrow band that works. It's dense enough to take daily knife work without cutting up, and still soft enough to give under a blade rather than blunting it. It doesn't hold smells the way scored plastic does.

The catch is that it hates being soaked. Keep it out of the dishwasher and oil it occasionally and it will outlast most of the kitchen.

Against the usual board

Boards at this price look near-identical in a photograph. The differences are the material underneath and whether anyone told you how to keep it alive.

Made from what grows back

Zaremora started with a simple question: what are the things you use every day actually made of? Boards show how far the answers differ — a solid piece and a thin veneer glued over ply look identical in a photograph and behave nothing alike the first time a knife touches them.

Ours are solid bamboo. Bamboo is a grass rather than a timber, so it regrows from the same root system and reaches full height in a few years instead of the decades a hardwood needs. It is also genuinely hard, which is what makes it work on a surface you cut on.

We publish what things are made of, including the parts that aren't plant-based. If there's a finish or an oil on a piece, it's in the description.

Questions

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No, and this is the one thing that will ruin it. Prolonged soaking combined with high heat makes bamboo swell, then split along the glue lines as it dries out again. Hand wash with warm water and a little soap, rinse, and stand it on an edge to dry rather than leaving it flat on the counter.

How do I keep it looking good?

Wipe it down after use and dry it properly. Every month or two, rub in a little food-grade mineral oil and leave it overnight. That's what stops the surface drying out, going pale and eventually cracking. Don't use olive or vegetable oil — they go rancid in the grain and the board starts to smell.

Is it safe to cut and serve food on?

Yes. Bamboo's density and tight grain are the reason it's used for boards in the first place — it resists the deep knife scarring that gives bacteria somewhere to sit, and unlike plastic it doesn't build up a web of scored channels over time. Engraving burns the surface rather than adding anything to it.

What's the engraving, and will it wear off?

It's the Zaremora mark, burned into the surface by laser rather than printed on top. There's no ink to wash away or peel. Cutting repeatedly over the same spot will mark it eventually, the same as it would mark any part of the board, so if you want it to stay crisp, work to one side of it.

Can I have my own name or a date engraved instead?

Not at the moment. These come with the Zaremora mark exactly as shown in the photographs. Custom wording is something we're looking at — if it's what you're after, get in touch and we'll let you know when it's available.

Will the grain match the photo?

Closely, but not exactly. Bamboo varies in tone and figure from piece to piece, so yours will be its own board rather than a copy of the one photographed. On a natural material that reads as character rather than a fault.

Will it warp?

Not if you keep it dry and oiled. Bamboo warps when one side takes on moisture and the other doesn't — which is what happens if you leave it lying flat and wet, or standing in a sink. Dry both faces and let air get to it and it stays flat.

What if it arrives damaged?

Get in touch and we'll put it right. Have a look at it when it arrives rather than a fortnight later — it makes the whole thing quicker for both of us.
